"I've always believed that a great meal is the best way to bring people together — and that food should taste as good as it looks."
Karen didn't come up through a traditional culinary path. She spent years in sales and advertising before asking herself a question most people never act on: what actually feeds my creative brain?
The answer led her to the New York Restaurant School in Greenwich Village, then back home to Birmingham — and into the kitchen of Frank Stitt at Highlands Bar and Grill, one of the most respected restaurants in the South.
From there, she and a business partner opened Snowbird Mountain Lodge, a 23-room historic inn tucked into the western North Carolina mountains. For 13 years, Karen cooked for guests who came expecting a retreat and left having experienced something they couldn't quite name — that particular kind of hospitality where the food, the setting, and the company all fit together perfectly.
The past decade-plus has been spent in a different kind of kitchen: the test kitchen. Recipe development and food styling for Southern Living, Food & Wine, Real Simple, Eating Well, InStyle, Cooking Light, and more. She's the person who makes food look the way it does in the magazines you keep on your coffee table. She also made sure those recipes actually work when you try them at home.
Today, Karen does both: she continues her recipe development work — including serving as recipe developer and curator for Dale's Seasoning — and brings that same level of craft directly to private clients across Alabama. The kitchen is the same. The care is the same. Your table just gets to be the destination.
